Transfer And Persistence Of Glass Fragments On Garments

Panes of float glass were broken in order to study transfer & persistence of glass fragments on clothing; several breaking devices were tested (hammer, stone and pendulum). The experiments, including two persons, consisted in breaking a pane & wearing the clothing for variable periods of time t: one pane was broken for each experiment. The results show that the number of fragments transferred is highly variable. However, some trends can be outlined. a) The number of fragments transferred depends on the number of strikes & on the distance between the pane & the person standing nearby; b) The number and size of the fragments retained depend on the period of time t, on the composition and/or weving of the garment; 3) Even 8hrs after breaking a glass pane it is possible to find as many as 7 glass fragments.
