Silver nano-particles formed in soda-lime glass by a combination of ion exchange and thermal processing have been studied using high resolution transmission electron microscopy and extended x-ray absorption spectroscopy to explore the structural characteristics of these nanoparticles and their interface to the glass matrix. In a size range of 1.5-4nm mostly single crystalline particles of nearly cuboctahedral shape were found. Averaged Ag-Ag coordination numbers derived from the respective particle sizes are used, together with the known Ag-O coordination number of matrix Ag+, to model the EXAFS-based coordination numbers of Ag species in the glass samples.
