Strength Of Fused Silica

By use of a simple apparatus, silica fibres about 30 microns in diameter have been produced under controlled conditions by drawing down one millimetre diameter silica rod in an oxy-coal gas flame. Such controlled variations in manufacturing conditions, as were possible with the apparatus, had no significant effect on the strengths of the fibres produced which had average tensile strengths of about 600 Kg/mm2 when tested in air at room temperature.
