Infrared reflection spectroscopy is shown to be a useful tool for quantitative analysis of glass corrosion. The peak amplitude is inadequate for analysis of surface composition due to the surface roughening accompanying corrosion. However, the frequency variations of the peaks that result from changes in the Na2O content of the glass also appear during corrosion and are used for the quantitative corrosion analysis of the 20 Na2), 80 Si02 and 20 Na2O, 10 CaO, 70 SiO2 (mo1%) glasses. These shifts are unaffected by the surface condition of the glass.
