Proper Refractories Essential For Nuclear Waste Vitrification

Proper selection of refractory materials is an important element of the safe and reliable operation of vitrification systems. Refractory performance has been evaluated in laboratory scale tests and in operating melter systems. The results of these tests showed that high-chromium, fused-cast refractories provide the necesaray durability for high-level waste applications. For low-level waste applications, where cost is an important element in system design, fused-cast or pressed high-chromium refractories and fused-cast AZS are appropriate glass contact materials.
