Process For The Manufacture Of Foam Glass

Foam glass is formed by heating to 750-950C a composition of (a) one or more amorphous mineral powder containing at least 50% SiO2 by weight; (b) gas-forming agents; (c) alkali-metal compounds. The (a) powder may be of perlite, silicon dust, slags, fly ash, etc. The (c) compound is preferably a silicate such as water-glass. A crystalline mineral powder such as magnesite or dolomite may be included in the composition to improve the mechanical and chemical resistance of the formed glass.
