The Physical Modelling Of The Flow Of Glass Through A Feeder Head

The flow in the feeder head has been investigated by physical modelling and dimensionless equation for calculating the hydraulic diameter of the orifice ring and the decrease in level in the revolving tube are derived. These equations are expressed in a dimensionless form and may be regarded as valid both for the model and for full scale working practice. The model results were successfully verified by tests on the shop floor and have proved to be particularly useful for checking the formation of plunger bubbles and thereby indicating appropriate adjustments to the feeder mechanism. The equations may also be used to provide information for controlling the weight of the gob by adjustments to the revolving tube.
