Particulars Of Thermally Stimulated Gas-Release From Silica Glass Fiber

It is shown that under heating in air to 1100 deg C, the mass of silica fibre decreases by around 11%. Primarily, water is released into the gas phase. Hydrocarbons, carbon oxides, and molecular hydrogen were found in low concentrations in the gas phase in addition to water. The appearance of hydrocarbons could be due to molecules which are adsorbed on the fibre surface at the time the fibre is made. The release of water at high temperature is due to the destruction of silanol groups.
