The main optical properties of soda-lime conventional glass (refractive index and absorption) are described, as well as their measurement methods. The dependence of refractive index on the composition, density and thermal history is also examined. Infrared and ultraviolet absorptions due to the main constitutents of the glass matrix are then correlated with the refractive index dispersion and glass transparency in the visible range. The primary colouring agents used in the glass industry are considered.
