Optical Properties And Polarisability Of Oxygen Ions In Silicate Glasses Containing Al203: A Structural Approach

In R20-Al203-Si02 and RO-Al203-Si02 glasses each structural unit contributes through a specific factor to the optical properties. The factor for refractive index, as well as of the molar refraction, of any structural unit does not depend on the glass composition. It depends only on the type of the modifier ion. The refraction of bridging oxygen ions in Si04 and Al04 tetrahedra and also of nonbridging oxygen ions in the silicate matrix are calculated for the first time. The factors obtained for the silicate units in the studied glasses are mostly the same as those found in binary silicate glasses.
