Nondestructive Testing Of Refractories In The Glass Industry

Failures of refractories may cause costly production interruptions so special attention has to be paid to their quality control. During the last 10 years nondestructive testing techniques have been developed and tested at the Institute. The investigations on fused cast refractories climaxed in the construction of a mobile device for ultrasonic testing of AZS blocks (this can be requested by glass companies). Attention is now focussed upon the development of NDT methods for the testing of bonded refractories and, alternatively, microwave equipment has been set up and good results reveal promising chances for its use in quality control of refractories.
