A new experimental procedure for impact testing of refractories at high temperature is presented. An acoustic method for monitoring the damage during impact tests is also described. Tests were conducted on the refractory materials normally used in aluminium holding and melting furnaces. Results show that fatigue tests involving repeated impacts are more appropriate for reproducing service conditions than single-shot impact tests.
