The temperature of molten glass leaving the melting furnace must be controlled in such a way that the glass obtains adequate properties for downstream operations such as forming. When molten glass flows through a channel, a source of heat is generally required to maintain and homogenise the temperature and viscosity of the glass. The most commonly-used heating systems are burners and the most common fuel is natural gas. In this article, the authors describe a new oxygen burner technology for the glass forehearth conditioning process.
