In a float glass chamber a layer of gas-permeable carbonaceous material is interposed between the bottom chamber wall and the refractory blocks which are mounted above the bottom wall. The porous material keeps the area below the blocks free from molten tin, and a vacuum system connected to this space removes gases from the area, thereby reducing bubbling defects in the glass sheet.
