Flat glass is manufactured by the float process on a molten metal bath, above which substantially all the protective gas atmosphere is introduced at the cooler downstream end of the bath and withdrawn at the hotter upstream end of the bath. The flow of protective gas from the cooler, the hotter end removes vaporised metal compounds which would otherwise condense and contaminate the glass surface.
