Mechanical Model To Simulate Buildup And Relaxation Of Stress During Glass Chemical Strengthening

A mechanical model comprising Hookean springs and Newtonian dashpots in a series configuration of a Maxwell element and a Voigt–Kelvin element is used to simulate the buildup and relaxation of stresses during ion exchange of glass. The spectrum of time constants for the dashpots spans from picoseconds to years. Good consistency is developed with molecular dynamic simulations published earlier.
