Measurement Of The Fibre Diameter Distribution Of Man-Made Vitreous Fibre Insulation Materials

A fast method using optical microscopy for the determination of the fibre diameter distribution of high temperature ceramic insulation has been developed. The method has been used to measure the diameter distribution of commercially available fibre insulation. The calculated specific surface area obtained from these measurements are in excellent agreement with BET surface area measurements obtained by nitrogen adsorption. Optical and SEM micrographs of these specimens are compared to each other.
