Ion Concentration And Interdiffusion In Ion Exchanged Glasses

Mass transport phenomena related to ion-exchange processes in glass are reviewed, transport equations are derived and analytical and numerical solutions are presented. Finite differences schemes are discussed for non-linear situations with a concentration dependent on the interdiffusion coefficient. Methods are presented to experimentally evaluate the concentration dependent interdiffusion coefficient and the mass average diffusion coefficient. Experimental results are presented for the mass average diffusion coefficient versus the ion-exchange process temperature for two different soda-lime glasses.
