Infrared reflection spectra in the 300-1500cm-1 region of some binary silicate, borate and phosphate glass samples, whose surfaces were ground and polished using various techniques involving water and/or organic liquids have been obtained. Optical constants and the infrared band parameters have been calculated using the dispersion analysis method. Large variations in the reflectivities and optical constants depending on the grinding and polishing methods used to prepared the sample surfaces were found. These results are interpreted in terms of changes in the composition of the surface layers due to hydration/condensation reactions. Glass surfaces prepared using an organic liquid for some states of grinding and for polishing reveal no spectroscopic signs of hydration, which is why such surfaces are conventionally considered as water free.
