How Tough Is The Casting Skin?

Whenever there is a discussion about the removal of casting skin from a fused cast AZS block, the majority of people believe that the skin and the area beneath it is the toughest part of the block. Therefore, it should not be removed. On the other hand, a minority of glass producers insist on the removal of casting skin for the reasons of glass quality. This article asks if there is any truth in the suggestion that the casting skin is the toughest part of an AZS block?
