50 years ago, the analysis of glass by its luminescence under ultraviolet (UV) light was forecast to be a key future technology. This has still to be realised. This paper addresses Glass Analysis by Emitted Light (GABEL) and the role it might play in the study of glass, particularly that from the 17th and 18th centuries. It covers: 17-18th century glass analysis requirements; glass luminescence; prototype system description; initial analysis results and long-term potential; conclusion, including remaining technical issues.
