Design, development and implementation of glass seals may decide the fate of SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cells) electrical power-generation technology. Although the basic concepts of SOFC technology have been known for many years, these energy conversion devices have not yet proved their economic viability. Commercial-electric power generation remains to the future. Progress is encouraging, however, because businesses and governments recognise the need for cost-effective, clean, portable, flexible and reliable electrical-generation techniques that can operate using a variety of fuels. Moreover, new materials and manufacturing processes are being developed that will apply to SOFC design and development.
