Fracture Mirrors In Polycrstalline Ceramics And Glass

Measurements of the radii of fracture mirrors have been used extensively to analyse glass fracture surfaces. This paper examines the variation of mirror radius with fracture stress in flint glass, steatie, 96% alumina and hot pressed alumina, silicon carbide and silicon nitride. The results for the various materials are compared and evaluated in terms of available theories. The effect of large scale residual surface stresses on the mirror radius was demonstrated for several materials.
