Fouling and corrosion problems in the regenerative glass furnaces are reviewed in this paper. First, the composition of glass furnace gases and carryover is presented. Fouling and corrosion mechanisms, which are different in the top zone (1400-1000°C) and bottom zone (1000-600°C) of regenerator, are then examined separately. Finally current and suggested methods of minimizing fouling and corrosion in regenerators are discussed. Fouling and corrosion by exhaust downstream of regenerators and possibilities of heat recovery using heat exchangers will be presented separately.
