The Evolution Of Refractory Materials In Forehearths

Sintered materials plan an important role in forehearth construction and new processes facilitate the produciton of large monolithic blocks. According to the authors of this paper, there is an increasing trend towards the use of refractories with low zirconia content but with a high Al2O3 content; this formulation having good corrosion resistance and little tendency to product glass defects. Increasing use of aluminous concrete for sealing round the feeder elements, so preventing contact between glass and insulation materials, is also reported.
