Effect Of Surface Defects On The Bend Strength Of Sitalls

Studies have been made on spodumene glass ceramics with bulk and surface defects, and cordierite glass ceramics with uniform and with different-size defects. It was found that the strength of the material with uniform defects does not depend on the conditions of mechanical polishing, while with the spodumene material the increased size of the surface defects due to polishing with a diamond rather than silicon carbide wheel significantly decreased the strength level of the specimens.
