Commercial E-glass melts containing 5-7% B2O3 must meet industry requirements including ASTM specifications; comply with environmental emission standards; have the lowest possible fibre forming temperature to reduce energy demand and cost; and they must be crystallisation resistant as they pass through the furnace and bushings. Trend line design, a new, compositional model, showed that the log3 forming temperature of incumbent E-glass melts can be reduced by up to 44 deg C by reducing the delta between log3 forming and liquidus temperature from 120 deg C to 65 deg C. Another new compositional model showed that the log3 forming temperature increases at the same delta temperature by 12 deg C for every 1% reduction of the boron level.
