Boron is volatile in the glass making process. In Europe, the second version of the reference document on Best Available Techniques (BAT, or BREF) for the manufacture of glass was adopted by the EC in February 2012 and published in March 2012. This revised version included an increased focus on boron emissions from furnaces. Thus, an understanding of the factors that affect boron emissions, and how they might be influenced, has never been more commercially relevant. This paper, presents laboratory data on how factors such as glass composition, combustion atmosphere, gas flow rate and temperature affect boron volatility. Based on similar data, predictive models are included that could help the glass industry better address boron emissions at the industrial plant level.
