Densification Of Mn2+ Doped Monolithic Silica Xerogels: An Electron Spin Resonance Study

Silica xerogels containing manganese ions in the oxidation state +2 have been successfully synthesized and treated at temperatures ranging from 300 to 1000 deg C. Comparison of ESR and luminescence spectra recorded for all samples both at room temperature and at 77K leads to the conclusions firstly, that the ions are localised at the surface of pores in the gel and secondly, that they can be divided into two groups.
