One of the main problems with cat scratch cord defects is that they are inconsistent and can evolve only on certain production lines. Several conditions provoke high density viscous glass to appear when the glass flows to the spout, deeper zones where the glass is colder being the most critical. Cords visible on the glass surface are the result of different glass properties and compositions. Dissolution of refractory materials is the reason for the difference in glass composition. This article presents Portuguese-based Vidromecanica's latest cord stirrer system for installation in forehearths.
