This paper presents an important treatise on convection currents. Part I. The methods of measuring convection currents are subjected to extensive analysis: Studies in live tanks & floats, plungers, scales etc and tracers (colour, composition); post mortem studies; devitrification of colour in the solidified melts; erosion of tank walls, and model tanks. No single method is believed to furnish sufficient evidence. Different tank constructions affect the results obtained in one particular type of construction. Results may vary in the same tank because of fortuitous factors. Nevertheless, the derivation of principles from such experiments is believed imperative as postulated by Preston, Part II. Interpretation of Experimental Facts.
