Condensate Risks Pertaining To Inner Surfaces Of Insulating Glass Units

In this paper condensation risks to glass surfaces in facades has been analyzed. Electrically heated glass presented for solution to prevent condensation risks. In high humidity conditions there have been traditionally risk of condensation in glass surfaces. U-value development, spacer- and frame development increased edge area surface temperatures of the glasses in facades. Nowadays it has been discussed does this condensation risk still exist? In this study glass surface temperatures and glass edge area temperatures calculated. Surface temperatures compared to dew point temperatures in various conditions. Result was that indoor glass surface condensation risk still exists, especially in humid conditions. Energy efficient solution to prevent condensation to glass surface is to use electrically heated glass. Electrically heated glass is commonly insulating glass unit, where heat is produced in conductive coating in inner pane by using small electrical current. Heat is directed to inside. Glass surface temperature is controlled automatic system. Set point of glass surface temperature is just above dew point. Even 30W/m2 is enough to prevent condensation in this solution. It reacts to environmental changes quickly and therefore is energy efficient.
