[Book] Chemical Technology Of Glass

The Chemical Technology of Glass (1913) is an important book which critically discusses the then current sates of glass science and technology exactly a century ago. Its author, Eberhard Zschimmer (187301940), was one of the first appropriately qualified applied scientists to devote the whole of his professional career to studying glass. He joined Otto Schott's company, Jenaer Glaswerke in 1898. His talents were such that he soon became Schott's senor scientist and a member of the Board of Directors. He left the company in 1921 when he was appointed to the staff of the Technical University in Karsruhe, where he remained as Professor from 1924 until his retirement. This book was dedicated to Otto Schott and was intended to assist the staff or his company in their exploration of all type types of glass that could be made and their properties. It is full of data about glass compositions and properties which are set out in over 300 tables. Unfortunately, but understandably, Otto Schott decided that it contained too much information that he did not want to be made available outside the company and he suppressed the book, purchasing the whole edition. It was then totally neglected for almost a century and only two copies, both in the archives of Schott Glassworks, are known to exist. This edition was translated by Michael Cable of Sheffield University with the assistance of many others.
