Since the discovery of bioactive glasses have been used for a number of biomedical applications, a key application has been as bone substitute materials where granules of bioactive glass are implanted into sides of bone defects. However, granulated bioglass after implantation have no inherent strength and can erupt from the implantation site. This research demonstrates the use of bioactive glasses as reactive precursors for the formation of calcium phosphate cements. Glasses within the system SiO2-CaO-Na2O-P2O5-(CaF2) were produced and the effect of glass composition on cement properties was investigated.
