After furnace commissioning is complete and glass production commences, it is a recognised fact that changes to the initial furnace design criteria may occur during the furnace campaign life. Experiencing such changes can have a significant effect on the internal wear of the furnace structure over the furnace designed campaign life period and possibly beyond. Because of the possible criteria changes, varying refractory wear characteristics and the possibility of a refractory structure failing in operation, is is of increasing importance to observe the condition of the furnace refractory structure on a scheduled basis. This article reports on the benefits of caring for the furnace refractory structure during a campaign life.
