Anomoalous Fluorescence Linewidth Behaviour In Eu3+ Doped Silicate Glass

The fluorescence line narrowing technique has been used to study the optical homogenous linewidth of the (formula) resonant transition in the silicate glass: Eu3+ and YA103: Eu3+ systems at temperatures in the region of 0 to 140K. The linewidth in the two cases is compared and is found to be two orders of magnitude larger in the case of the amorphous host. An ion lattice mechanism is proposed to explain the unusual temperature dependence of the linewidth in the amorphous case. This is shown to arise from the Eu3+ disorder mode interaction in the glass.
