Anomalous Birefringence In Discretely Phase-Separated Glasses

Rods of Corning 7070 alkali borosilicate glass were stretched or compressed at 600-700 degrees C before or after discrete phase separation and given a post pulling heat treatment at around 500 degrees C. The resulting birefringence was measured as a function of temperature.
