A comprehensive study of binary and ternary quartz-sodium carbonate-calcium carbonate batch reactions, with and without cullet, has been undertaken in order to accelerate the development of predictive models for the glass industry. In situ x-ray diffraction has been used to provide phase evolution and kinetics analysis of batch components during initial batch melting. Traditional quenching techniques have complemented high temperature x-ray diffraction data obtained at heating rates from 10 to 200 deg C/min. The influences of heating rate, composition, grain size and cullet content on batch reactions have been investigated.
