Wine Corks - Ancient And Modern

As long as wine has been a regular drink of the human race, so it has been that a method of healthy storage has been an essential feature of the wine process. In very early times, the storage of wine in containers was completed by the use of stoppers made of leather and mortar. Since those early efforts, however, along with the development of high quality glass bottles, the major method of stoppering has been through the use of natural cork bungs. This paper looks at the origins of cork and plastic closures.
