Water Tainted In The Bottle By Chemicals

A drinks manufacturer has urged customers not to store bottled water in the same cupboard as chemicals & cleaning products. The warning came after two bottles of Volvic were found to be contaminated with low levels of napthalene. The chemical, which is used to make mothballs, dyes & resins, gave the water an unpleasant taste & smell but did not pose a health risk, said Volvic's producer, Danone. The investigation was launched after a mother from London reported the foul-tasting water. Danone said the contamination could not have occurred during the bottling process in France nor during delivery. It believes the two bottles must have been stored alongside strong chemicals which seeped through the plastic. "If you store water in an area where there are strong-smelling chemicals & a spillage takes place, it will penetrate the plastic of the bottle" a spokesman said.
