Waste - Hazardous Substances In Electrical & Electronic Products

The European Commission reminded industry, in a press release dated 30 June 2006, that an EU wide ban on the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic products entered into force on 1 July 2006. Four heavy metals and two groups of brominated flame retardents are prohibited as from 1 July 06 as they pose a direct risk to workers' health when waste electrical and electronic equipment is recycled and can be released into the environment when such waste is incinerated or disposed of in landfill dumps. A Question and Answer document on EU policy relating to Electrical and Electronic Waste is also available. see: europa.eu.int/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=MEMO/06/263&format=HTML&aged=0&language=EN&guiLanguage=en
