Defra announced 4 March 2010 that a consultation on ambitious new targets to recycle over 70% of packaging waste has been published. This consultation could save approximately 8m tonnes of waste from landfill and 9m tonnes of greenhouse gases by 2020. The Courtauld Commitment is a voluntary agreement with grocery and traditional non-grocery manufacturers and retailers, managed by the Government's Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP). Phase 1 of the Courtauld Commitment successfully ran from July 2005 to March 2010, over that time its 42 signatories including all Britain's major supermarkets succeeded in halting packaging growth. Phase 2 of the Courtauld Commitment runs from April 2010 to December 2012. For full details, please go to: www.defra.gov.uk/news/2010/100304a.htm
