The UK's Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) is in 'disarray',according to the UK Shadow Environment Minister Gregory Barker. His comments came during a House of Commons debate on waste recycling where it was claimed that the Department's chronic mismanagement & overspending was responsible for cutbacks to organisations such as the Waste Resources & Action Programme & the Business Resource & Efficiency Waste Partnership. 'Despite making cuts of £200M since April 2007, Defra needs to cut a further £100m from its budget in the coming weeks', said Barker.'Much of the overspend was avoidable, it was the direct result of Government mismanagement'. He also stressed the need to deal with waste before it reaches the end of its lifecycle, ensuring increased product lifespans & enhancing recyclability.
