Volatilisation Of Molten Sodium Metaborate With Convection Of The Furnace Atmosphere

Standard models for describing convective mass transport are reviewed. Experiments on the volatilisation of sodium metaborate with varying flow rates of nitrogen over the melt are then reported. It is shown that, in these conditions, sodium metaborate volatilises without change in the conposition of the melt but that the rate of volatilisation is considrably affected by the shielding effect of the rim of the capsule containing the sample.
