Vitrification Of Hazardous Wastes

Contaminated sediment in lagoon areas concerns different countries worldwide and action to remove these sediments is urgently required. Vitrification technology is presently being used to solve the problem of inertization of hazardous wastes, whether this is carried out directly or with the addition of corrective raw material to vitrify the system economically or to produce glass material suitable for disposal or reuse. A feasibility study was performed at Padua University and at the glass experimental station, demonstrating that a systematic use of glass cullet correction in a large-scale sediment treatment affords stability and chemical durability to the result.
