The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) has launched a safeguard investigation into imports of float glass to Vietnam originating from different countries and territories, according to the Vietnam Competition Administration Department (VCAD). The ministry reportedly issued the decision to investigate the imported float glass after two domestic manufacturers, Viglacera Float Glass Co and Vietnam Float Glass, requested safeguard measures due to rapidly increasing imports which were affecting their business. Together, the two manufacturers contribute 90% of Vietnam's domestic float glass. Volumes of imported float glass in Vietnam has increased from 1.2M/m2 in 2007 to 8.1M/m2 in 2008, reaching 1.35M/m2 in the first quarter of 2009. The companies have proposed import tax rates of 40% for 200 days.
