Valpak has signed an agreement with glass processor Berryman's for the provision of glass PRNs. The scheme, with a membership of over 2,000 obligated companies, announced the agreement last week, and although the size of the deal is unclear it is thought it will offset a sizeable amount of Valpak's glass obligation. Berryman's is not allowed to issue PRNs when its cullet is used to make glass bottles and jars in the UK. But it can issue them when cullet is exported or used in alternative markets. UK glass reprocessors, such as Rockware and UG, are still awaiting approval for their own scheme, Glaspak, before they start to issue their own PRNs at £6/tonne. Valpak would not divulge the price it is paying Berryman's yet the fact that the processor has to develop alternative markets, has led many to believe it could be as high as £30/tonne.
