Until now, mathematical modelling of glass furnaces has mainly been used for the redesign and optimization of new furnaces. Yet it also offers an easier way of measuring fundamental parameters such as local velocity of the molten glass or height of the batch layer, which would otherwise have to be taken inside the hot and corrosive conditions of a real furnace. This article explores the application of mathematical modelling for control of the melting process.
