Not only can glass be used to repair broken or damaged parts in the body but also for the active treatment of disease. Glass can be used in the body in three ways. The first is that of biologically inert alkali- alkaline-earth-aluminosilicate glasses used in dental restoration. The second is that of modified soda-lime-silica glasses that are bioactive & have the capacity to bond to living soft & hard tissues (called BioGlas) & the third is that of rare-earth aluminosilciate glasses to deliver large doses of localised radiation to diseased organs inside the body, used in the treatment of liver cancer. These glasses differ from other glasses used - they contain no alkali or alkaline-earth oxides and are radioactive when placed in the body.
