[Usa] North American Recycling Facilities Expansion

In 2009, the US Environmental Protection Agency reported that glass container recycling increased to 31% from 28% in 2008. With single-stream recycling collection now in 64% of communities, it is apparent that the industry must keep pace with demand by implementing more glass recycling plants. In 2010, former Ohio Governor Ted Strickland announced an innovative agreement between Rumpke Inc and glass container manufacturer O-I to strengthen Ohio's glass recycling market. Facilitated by the Ohio ODNR, the agreement will enable Rumpke to provide recycled glass feedstock to OI. Historically, glass recycling has been a challenge for some Ohio communities where it has not been economically feasible or has not met the specifications of large users, such as OI. This landmark agreement between these two businesses will begin to close the loop on glass recycling in the state. The GPI anticipates the expansion of recycling facilities in the USA to be a growing trend in coming years. The industry goal is 50% recycled content by 2013.
